The Political Future of L.A.

Super Bowl LVI did not disappoint in showcasing the promise of Los Angeles from the thrill of the game to the featured home-grown talent at the halftime show. In the excitement of the Rams victory over the weekend, some people may have missed that Friday marked the deadline for candidates to file their intentions to run for office in the City of Los Angeles in 2022.

This year, voters in the City of L.A. will elect a new Mayor, City Attorney, City Controller, three new City Councilmembers, and vote in the re-election efforts of five current Councilmembers. This change in the political future of the City of Los Angeles is coinciding with a 25% change in the state legislature’s leadership. As it stands, we are set to elect a record number of candidates who will shape public policy in Los Angeles and California for at least the next 20 years.

If we are to continue to be the great city that came through on Super Bowl Sunday, then we must understand the nuances of the political future of L.A. along with each candidate’s platform, views, perspectives, and approach to public office. Of particular importance, the Chamber is working to support representation which provides an open forum for balanced dialogue and understand the meaning of stewardship and accountability to maintain public trust.

The 2022 election is an important moment in time. We are emerging from the pandemic and dealing with a myriad of issues: a labor shortage, lack of housing for middle income residents, homelessness, and public safety, to name a few. It’s imperative that elected officials understand the value of keeping Los Angeles globally competitive to attract and keep talent and jobs here.
