Double Power Play: United in Sport and Family with Olympians
Marissa and Hannah Brandt
Marissa Brandt | Hannah Brandt
Team Korea Team USA
Two sisters, two Olympic teams, one remarkable family tale. Sisters and best friends Marissa and Hannah Brandt grew up playing ice sports in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area – first figure skating (Hannah first, with Marissa to follow), then switching to ice hockey shortly after.
Marissa, who was born in South Korea, was adopted as an infant by a Minnesota couple, Greg and Robin Brandt, who had been experiencing difficulties conceiving their own biological children. Just before the couple received their first picture of their would-be child from the adoption agency, Greg and Robin discovered they were expecting and gave birth nine months later to Hannah.
Side-by-side, the sisters came to compete and grow within a male-dominated sport. Both women eventually made their way to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea, one representing the U.S., and the other the first-ever united North and South Korea women's hockey team, in one of the most unique stories to have emerged from these Olympic Games.
