03.29.17 Gov. Brown's Transportation Investment Package Press Conference

On Wednesday, the Chamber joined Gov. Jerry Brown, Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, along with labor and business leaders to announce a landmark transportation investment package. The $5 billion-a-year program will provide funding to fix California roads, freeways and bridges, and comes with strict accountability provisions to ensure funds can only be spent on transportation. Our ACCESS Sacramento trip’s Transportation & Infrastructure team members participated in the press conference. The Chamber has been a strong advocate for this investment for the past year.

03.24.17 Roosevelt High School Linked Learning Students Law & Public Service Day at City Hall

The Chamber's Center for Education Excellence and Talent Development provided students from Roosevelt High School's Law and Public Service pathway a behind-the-scenes look at L.A. City Hall. Here, the City Attorney's office provided the students access to an inspired experience in public service and the opportunity to hear from high level leadership, including L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer; L.A. City Council President Herb Wesson; Kevin James, president of the City of Los Angeles Board of Public Works; and Monique Earl, assistant general manager for L.A. City Transportation. This work highlights the Chamber's efforts supporting Linked Learning, where education integrates rigorous academics with industry themed pathways.

03.15.17 California Transportation Commission Reception at Union Station

The Chamber and partners Metro and Mobility 21 hosted a reception in honor the California Transportation Commission (CTC) at the beautifully renovated, historic Los Angeles Union Station. The evening was filled with transportation leaders, including the Chamber’s very own Board Member and CTC commissioner, Fran Inman, who also serves as the Vice Chair of the CTC. The Chamber joined Max Health Medical Group to celebrate the opening of their Wilshire Blvd. location with a ribbon cutting.

03.15.17 Global Initiatives Council - Kevin Klowden, Milken Institute

Nearly 70 members of the Chamber's Global Initiatives Council convened this week to hear from Kevin Klowden, executive director of Milken Institute's California Center. Klowden provided an overview of California and the L.A. Region's exporting activity in global markets, and the significance of foreign direct investment for the overall economy. He emphasized the need for California to develop and implement formal strategic export activities and programs to encourage exporters to have stronger commercial presence in foreign markets. He noted that "L.A. exports make up 40 percent of the State's total exports."

02.27.17 L.A. Talent Challenge Launch with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and Partners

The Chamber, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, and member businesses and partners kicked-off this year's summer internship and year around employment initiatives. As part of this campaign, the Chamber announced its L.A. Talent Challenge. The Chamber has set a challenge to reach 500 more companies and in turn, challenge those companies to hire or sponsor at least one student intern this summer.

02.27.17 Chamber and Anti-Recidivism Coalition Jail Tour

On Monday, the Chamber gave an insider's look at the L.A. County's youth detention center, Central Juvenile Hall to Chamber board members, non-profit partners and funders, and business organizations working with the Chamber on smart justice efforts. Participants joined in an in-depth conversation around helping youth succeed through education and rehabilitation. Co-hosted by the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, this one-of-a-kind experience provided the business community the opportunity to explore its role in helping system-involved youth receive a second chance.

L.A. County Sheriff Jim McDonnell joined the Chamber for a conversation on public safety in the L.A. region. Sheriff McDonnell discussed on how mental illness and the homelessness crisis impact the police force, and the role trust plays in police and community relations.

02.15.17 Global Initiatives Council with U.S. Chamber SVP John Murphy

The Global Initiatives Council heard from John Murphy, Senior Vice President of International Policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, as he provided an overview of the U.S. Chamber's trade policy recommendations under the new administration and what to expect of the new president and Congress. He also reviewed the economic and trade outlook for the world economy and the business community's priorities.
