L.A. Jobs PAC, Rick Caruso and Joe Buscaino Team Up to Lift Jim McDonnell to Success in Sheriff’s Race

Los Angeles – For the June primary election, the L.A. Jobs PAC, sponsored by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, joined in a strategic partnership with Rick J. Caruso and Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino to raise significant funds to drive a dynamic persuasion campaign effort for L.A. County Sheriff candidate Jim McDonnell.  The independent expenditure (IE) campaign, managed by Los Angeles campaign consulting firm The Baughman Company, raised $260,000 from nearly a dozen donors to microtarget communications and persuade voters to support McDonnell.

Initial research and polling funded by the IE showed that although Jim McDonnell was well-regarded in his Long Beach home base, only 24% of the city’s voters were expected to show up for him at the polls.  However, once the McDonnell record as a reformer and experienced law enforcement CEO was communicated to Long Beach voters, an expanded McDonnell vote was within reach.  Starting with a narrowcast absentee voter target and shifting to a wider target of expected June 3rd voters all through May, the campaign implemented a strategic communications and microtargeted direct mail plan to drive McDonnell voters to the polls.  To view a gallery of the mail pieces targeted at L.A. The result? 74% of Long Beach voters turned out for Jim McDonnell, swelling by three times McDonnell's initial level of support shown in polling before the implementation of the independent expenditure campaign.

The IE also took advantage of the strong public endorsement from District 15 Councilman Joe Buscaino by targeting voters in his district who ultimately showed high level support for McDonnell and helped drive up his overall percentage countywide.

“The L.A. JOBS PAC, Rick Caruso, Joe Buscaino, and all our IE partners believe strongly that Jim’s well-known record of integrity, successful reform, and unmatched management experience will allow him to bring a fresh start and a steady hand, to renew the public’s faith in the sheriff's department," stated Gary Toebben, President & CEO of the LA Area Chamber. “Our independent expenditure campaign, run by the Baughman Company, effectively and efficiently communicated the right messages to the right audience and the results speak for themselves.”
