WORLD TRADE WEEK BREAKFAST KICKS OFF MONTH OF EVENTS
Nearly 600 business executives and members of the diplomatic corps gathered Thursday, May 2 for the 87th Annual World Trade Week Kickoff Breakfast at the JW Marriott at LA Live. "I encourage each of you to look beyond the U.S. and utilize the other 95 percent of the world's population to grow your business and provide economic growth to the L.A. area," said World Trade Week Chair Noel Massie, UPS. Chamber Board Member Joseph Czyzyk, Mercury Air Group, Inc., received the prestigious Stanley T. Olafson Bronze Plaque Award for his commitment to expand international trade opportunities in Southern California. Keynote speaker Tyler Bryson, Microsoft Corporation discussed how new technology can help small businesses become more competitive in the global market. Chamber receives briefing on new reality of global trade
 In mid-April, the Global Initiatives Council heard from Chamber Board Member Elizabeth Stephenson, McKinsey & Company, Inc., on her perspective on the role of trade in the global economy. She highlighted emerging trends in trade including the shifting balance between developed and emerging economies, the growing role of South-South trade and the impact of near shoring. Chamber welcomes Philippine Ambassador to the U.S.
 Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Cuisia and prominent business executives visited the Chamber in late April. The visit was part of the Philippine Government's Investment Roadshow in the United States. Ambassador Cuisia and members of the trade delegation noted that the Philippines has a large financial surplus, and is eager to attract know-how and not capital. He noted that the Philippine government wants to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Members of the trade delegation included representatives of different industrial sectors including semiconductors/electronics, mines, executive recruitment, investment banking and education. Obama announces nominees for Department of Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative
  Last week, President Barack Obama selected Chicago business woman Penny Pritzker as his nominee to lead the Commerce Department and White House aide Michael Froman to be U.S. Trade Representative. Froman is the deputy national security adviser for international economics. Previously at investment bank Citigroup, he has been an aggressive free trade advocate inside the White House and a major supporter of policies to ensure that Americans have equal access to markets comparedwith workers from other countries. Pritzker is an investor and daughter of the co-founder of the Hyatt hotel chain. Read more.

Brazil's Roberto Azevedo to head the World Trade Organization
The Brazilian trade diplomat has been named as the next head of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Roberto Azevedo will succeed France's Pascal Lamy in September. Azevedo has been Brazil's ambassador to the WTO since 2008. He will be the first Latin American to head the WTO since its creation in 1995. Read more.
