CHAMBER COMES OUT ON TOP IN MARCH 5 ELECTION
On Tuesday, five out of six Chamber PAC-supported City of Los Angeles candidates and one out of two Los Angeles Unified School District board candidates either won or will move on to the run-off elections in May. Thank you to our Chamber members who voted on Tuesday and supported the L.A. Jobs PAC's efforts to elect candidates who support job creation, business investment and fiscal solvency in our city. Contact Ruben Gonzalez, 213.580.7568.

  • Southern California International Gateway
Today the L.A. Board of Harbor Commissioners considered the final Environmental Impact Report of BNSF Railway Company's Southern California International Gateway (SCIG). The Chamber has been a strong proponent and spoke in support of the project. SCIG will provide cleaner air, reduce traffic and create more jobs — creating up to 1,500 construction jobs per year over three years of construction. SCIG will also generate about 250 operational jobs in 2016 and 450 direct jobs by full build-out in 2023. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.
  • San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station
On Wednesday, the L.A. City Council's Energy & Environment Committee adopted a Chamber-supported resolution that asks the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to conduct a prudent, transparent and precautionary review process before it determines if San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station (SONGS) can be safely restarted. The Chamber spoke in support of a safe restart of SONGS based on a sound scientific process, and voiced concerns about energy reliability and affordability in the region. Contact Frank Lopez, 213.580.7573.

Leadership L.A. 2013 begins this week
The Southern California Leadership Network's Leadership L.A. Class of 2013 launched today at the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Throughout the next two days, the 46 fellows will talk about the internal dynamics of leadership with Jeremy Hunter, Drucker School of Management, Claremont Graduate University; receive an introduction to personal leadership style assessment from Kevin Groves, Pepperdine University; and be part of a series of leadership building exercises with an overview of civic entrepreneurship with Jodi Walker, Success Alliances. Contact Hadia Kabir, 213.580.7524.

Chamber launches L.A. Regional STEM Hub
The Chamber launched its L.A. Regional STEM Hub Wednesday during a STEM Workforce Seminar at Northrop Grumman Corporation. The hub will develop collaboration to enhance and expand the future science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce in the L.A. region. The Chamber hosted more than 140 members of L.A.'s STEM community, with participants discussing how education and industry can collaborate in innovative ways to drive reform in K-12/undergraduate education and provide sustainable models for STEM workforce and skills development. Contact Geraldine Contreras, 213.580.7553.
