HIRING OUR HEROES
Thank you to the more than 25 Chamber member companies — including AT&T, Bank of America, UPS, Verizon and Wells Fargo — that joined us on Tuesday for the Hiring Our Heroes Veterans Event at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. Chamber supports modernization of Los Angeles International Airport
 The Chamber spoke at two public hearings this past week on the draft environmental impact report for the Los Angeles International Airport Specific Plan Amendment Study. The Chamber supports modernizing LAX to reflect its critical role as the gateway to Los Angeles. The Chamber is leading a coalition along with the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, LA/Orange Counties Building & Construction Trades Council and a growing group of businesses to support the completion of LAX modernization, which will accommodate the next generation of larger aircraft in an effort to maintain our regional competitiveness and help our tourism industry continue to grow. Chamber supports non-exclusive franchise system for waste hauling
 On Wednesday, the Chamber testified at a joint meeting of the Energy & Environment Committee and Ad-Hoc Committee on Recycling in support of a non-exclusive wastehaul franchise system as outlined in a report by the City's chief administrative officer. The Bureau of Sanitation and Board of Public Works had recommended an exclusive system, in which the City would be divided into waste sheds and one hauler would be awarded the contract for each area. A non-exclusive system would require haulers to meet city rules. This allows the city increased control and oversight, while maintaining a market-based industry that keeps rates competitive, and is responsive to the diverse needs of our commercial and multi-family facilities. Chamber-supported key community college success bill on it’s way to the governor
 This week, two key community college success bills passed out of the Legislature and are on the way to the governor’s desk. Both bills are a direct result of Chamber-sponsored SB 1143, which created the Student Success Task Force. Chamber-Sponsored SB 1062 (Liu) would strengthen the leadership capacity of the chancellor’s office by providing limited hiring flexibility for appointing senior staff. LADWP Rate Payer Advocate discusses power rate proposal
 The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power proposed power rate proposal would raise rates about 11 percent over the next two years. LADWP Rate Payer Advocate Fred Pickel reported that the rates are driven mainly by capital expenditures necessary to meet state and federal mandates. Pickel is recommending the DWP Board of Commissioners and L.A. City Council approve the power rate proposal when it comes before them in September. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.

In an effort to create a more secure and enjoyable game-day experience for fans at local sports events, the Los Angeles Sports Council, in cooperation with sports venues, area teams and law enforcement agencies, announced on Monday the creation of the Southern California Fan Code of Conduct, recently approved by the Council's Task Force on Fan Behavior.
