Chamber-proposed L.A. Office of Economic Analysis funded
Due to the efforts of L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti, the City is creating a new Office of Economic Analysis. The office will ensure that new proposals for City legislation or regulations undergo an independent, nonpartisan economic analysis to evaluate impact on private sector jobs creation, the City's business climate and the overall economy. "We applaud the creation of this new Office of Economic Analysis," said Chamber Board Chair Matt Toledo, Los Angeles Business Journal. "The office will provide the critical jobs information currently lacking from City policymaking." The Chamber looks forward to working with the City on continued implementation. Chamber applauds L.A. City Council deficit hawks
The L.A. City Council approved the 2011 city budget earlier this week to help close a $485 million deficit. The budget includes reductions in City services, new and higher fees on Angelenos, and the possible elimination of at least 761 employee positions. Eleven councilmembers voted for the budget. "These councilmembers prevailed over the misguided notion that city government is an employment service, and the fiscal denial about the need to pass a real budget now," said Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. Leadership L.A. 2010 engages education community for future opportunities
On Friday, the Leadership L.A. Class of 2010 focused on education in Los Angeles, including an overview of the challenges and opportunities facing the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). "If we are really committed to the children and believe the rhetoric we tell our teachers and parents about the importance of student achievement, we will agree to change the rules and work together," said LAUSD Board Member Yolie Flores Aguilar, above left, on the importance of the Public School Choice Resolution. "It is the only way to break through the status quo that exists today." Fellows also interacted with administrators, teachers and students at the four Small Learning Communities at Miguel Contreras Learning Complex and discussed different ways they can make a difference in the education system.
