CHAMBER RALLIES BEHIND NEWLY ELECTED LAUSD SUPERINTENDENT. The Chamber and L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined business, education and nonprofit leaders Wednesday in support of Superintendent-elect John Deasy. "Now, more than ever, Los Angeles and the state of California face a serious challenge regarding our education system," Villaraigosa said. "That means we need dramatic improvements to our education system … And it starts with a strong leader."

Chamber members honored at first Board of Directors meeting of the year
 The Chamber recognized three Chamber members who volunteered their time during 2010 at its first Board of Directors meeting of the year Thursday. The Chamber recognized Board Member of the Year: Jerry Neuman, Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP; Volunteer of the Year: Craig Morris, KPMG LLP; and Ambassador of the year Kristen Castle, Out of the Box Events. Chamber testifies in support of Port of Los Angeles project
 With hundreds of jobs and Port competitiveness at stake, the Chamber testified this week at L.A. City Council in support of the Port of Los Angeles' Main Channel Deepening Project, which will allow the Port to accommodate the next generation of large container ships. Councilmember Janice Hahn asked Council to assert jurisdiction over Gambol Industries' shipyard proposal and send it to the Trade, Commerce and Tourism Committee for further review after the Port deemed it infeasible without delaying their dredging project. The Chamber thanked Gambol for its dedication to bringing jobs to the Harbor region, but added that delays to the project would cause the loss of more jobs and risk port competitiveness as the Port begins to recover from the recession and anticipates the opening of the Panama Canal. Council voted to take jurisdiction over the issue and the Chamber looks forward to further study of the project. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.
Chamber discusses 30/10, development reform and homelessness with City leaders
 City of Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Jaime de la Vega, the Mayor's Office of Economic and Business Policy Director Jeremiah Jackson and Renee White Fraser, co-chair of the Business Leaders Task Force on Homelessness, discussed important land use and mobility issues at the Chamber's Land Use & Mobility Council meeting on Wednesday. "The private sector—the community—you are our customer," said Jackson, who spoke about the City's plans to improve the development approval process. surges in television and feature production in the fourth quarter, according to FilmL.A. In all, FilmL.A.
recorded 43,646 permitted production days in 2010, compared to 37,979 tallied
