 CHAMBER TESTIFIES IN SUPPORT OF PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING On Tuesday, the L.A. City Council approved a one-time allocation of $18 million to provide 136 units of permanent supportive housing in Los Angeles. The Chamber spoke in support of this opportunity to invest in housing units that are critical to moving forward our work on Home For Good, an initiative of the Chamber and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Above, a rendering of Skid Row Housing Trust's New Genesis Apartments.  • Exclusive waste franchise On Wednesday, the City of L.A.'s joint Energy & Environment and Ad-Hoc Waste & Recycling Committee held its last hearing on the implementation of the exclusive wastehaul franchise system approved by the L.A. City Council last year. The Chamber opposed the plan. Business community concerns include the lack of information on a fee structure and the lack of customer service enforcement. The full Council will consider it next week, with the committee giving a directive to staff to continue working on issues affecting hospitals and studios. City Council’s Planning and Land Use Management Committee approved a two-year implementation workplan for “Clean Up, Green Up.” This program for Boyle Heights, Pacoima and Wilmington creates new overlay zones with increased performance standards. River Ecosystem Restoration Study President Barack Obama included $400,000 in his FY 2014 budget to complete an L.A. River Ecosystem Restoration Study conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Chamber advocated for this funding during its ACCESS Washington, D.C. trip last month. The completion of the study will allow the City to move forward with a 10-mile restoration of the L.A. Jobs Political Action Committee (PAC), sponsored by the Chamber, hosted a reception for L.A. City Controller Wendy Greuel. Greuel met with business leaders, outlining her ideas for bolstering the City's near- and long-term fiscal health. City Councilmember Englander discusses fixing L.A.'s streets Today, L.A. City Councilmember Mitchell Englander discussed options to pay for the repair of streets in Los Angeles at the Government & Fiscal Affairs Council. "If we don't fix these problems, it will double in price later and will be passed on to our children and grandchildren,” Englander said.
