CHAMBER THANKS L.A. YOUTH AT WORK VOLUNTEERS AND SUPPORTERS

On Wednesday, the Chamber recognized all the volunteers who have played a critical role in helping L.A. youth develop the confidence and skills they need to compete in today's labor market. More than 40 volunteers from Chamber member organizations, including Walmart Foundation, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, AT&T, Vons and the Consulate General of Belgium attended the special L.A. Youth at Work luncheon. “We are so fortunate to have so many caring adults who have given their time and experience to help prepare the next generation of young adults to enter the workforce,” said Chamber Senior VP of Education & Workforce Development David Rattray. Chamber-supported wastewater upgrade contract approved
On Tuesday, the Chamber testified in support of an $88 million, 15-year contract to Honeywell International to replace, maintain and upgrade computer control systems at four wastewater treatment plants and the City's wastewater collection system. With more than 4 million people currently served, our wastewater automation system suffers from multiple weaknesses that require complete replacement. In approving this contract, the L.A. City Council took a step towards modernizing the City's infrastructure system to meet our environmental needs and create 80 local jobs. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.

Chamber members encouraged to attend Redistricting Commission public hearings
The Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission is holding 15 public hearings starting next week, Monday, Dec. 5 through Tuesday, Jan. 10 to solicit input on the redrawing of council district boundaries. "We need to hear from the residents of Los Angeles," said Commission Chair Arturo Vargas. "This process will affect everything from city services to your representation for the next 10 years." The Commission will release a draft map of the boundaries by the first week of February. Contact Beverly Kenworthy, 213.580.7531.

California Connections travels to San Francisco, Oakland and Silicon Valley
This week, California Connections, Southern California Leadership Network's statewide fellowship, is providing an in-depth look at the political climate, economy and land-use transformations taking place in the Bay Area. On Thursday, the group at left, visited the Transbay Transit Center re-development site, which will open in 2017 and employ more than 100,000 people. "The new Transit Center will serve the California high speed rail, which is important to connecting people up and down the peninsula," said Scott Boule, Transbay Joint Powers Authority. "It will be the hub for businesses in the entire Bay Area." Contact Alexander Pampalone, 213.580.7547.

Los Angeles County Bar Foundation raises money for legal service projects
More than 200 supporters of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation gathered last month for an evening of Vegas-style gaming to raise funds to support the Los Angeles County Bar Association's three pro bono projects: domestic violence, AIDS legal services, and immigration legal assistance. The association has provided legal services through these projects for low income families in L.A. County for more than 25 years. Last year alone, the three projects helped more than 20,000 people and provided more than $3.6 million in pro bono services.
