All of us on the staff of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce want to thank our 1,600 members and their 650,000 employees for the economic contributions you make to our city, county and region. We also thank you for your leadership and financial contributions to hundreds of non-profit and social service organizations who help thousands of people during this holiday season and throughout the year. We wish you all a wonderful holiday season and an exciting and prosperous new year. Please note, in order to provide our staff and their families time to enjoy the holidays, our offices will be closed from Friday, Dec. 24 through Sunday, Jan. 2. We will resume regular office hours on Monday, Jan. 3.


Inaugural Dinner to feature installation of new board chair and award presentations
On Thursday, Feb. 10, the Chamber will host its 122nd Annual Inaugural Dinner at the JW Marriott at L.A. Live. The gala event will feature the installation of the new Chair of the Board, Joseph A. Czyzyk, Mercury Air Group, Inc. The Chamber will also recognize extraordinary leadership with the presentation of its three signature awards. The Civic Medal of Honor will be presented to Barry A. Sanders, Latham & Watkins, LLP (retired); the Distinguished Business Leader Award will be presented to Edward P. Roski, Jr., Majestic Realty Co.; and the Corporate Leadership Award will be given to San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino. RSVP now or contact MIchelle Attebery, 213.580.7585

Harbor area designated as State Enterprise Zone
This morning, the Chamber joined Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilmember Janice Hahn at SA Recycling on Terminal Island, where they announced the approval of the new State Enterprise Zone designation for the Harbor region, including the communities of San Pedro, Wilmington and Harbor City-Harbor Gateway. Businesses will receive up to $11,700 in tax credits in the first year for hiring local residents and those in hard-to-hire categories. They also stand to benefit from sales tax credits on purchases of machinery, low-cost loans and a 35 percent electrical rate reduction from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. "This designation will really help bring employees back to the area," said George Adams, president of SA Recycling. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.

Chamber Senior VP appointed to California Community Colleges task force
As a result of the Chamber’s leadership on Senate Bill 1143, California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott has appointed Chamber Senior Vice President of Education & Workforce Development David Rattray to the statewide student success task force. The group will be charged with helping improve student completion rates at community colleges.  The 21-member task force is set to be approved by the Board of Governors in January and will comprise various representatives from the community colleges such as faculty and students, along with business leaders, academic researchers and elected officials.  Contact David Rattray, 213.580.7515.

Chamber to speak at forum on corporate community investment
This week, the U.S. Chamber's Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC), Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and Northrop Grumman Corporation announced the first of a series of forums that BCLC and PBS will be hosting across the United States in 2011 as part of its Corporate Community Investment initiative (CCI) "Listening Tour." The Los Angeles Focus Forum on Corporate Community Investment will be held on Monday, Jan. 10, from 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Northrop Grumman Corporation. L.A. The Boeing Company gets order from Mexico for three satellites
The Boeing Company's satellite-making operation in El Segundo got a major lift this week with a $1-billion contract for three satellites for the Mexican government. The large order, which also includes supplying ground-based communications equipment, could help preserve high-paying engineering jobs in Southern California. The second big satellite contract for Boeing this year, this deal will also help hundreds of smaller firms that supply parts for the massive satellites. Read more.

Jack Kyser Memorial Celebration Announced
The family of beloved Southern California economics guru, Jack Kyser, has announced that a public memorial service, "Celebrating the Life of Jack Kyser," has been scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, from 1:30 – 3 p.m. in the Crystal Room at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, 506 South Grand Ave., in downtown Los Angeles. Because of room capacity, friends wishing to attend the memorial service are encouraged to register. Guests are encouraged to use public transit. Parking is also available at the hotel or the public parking lot across the street at Pershing Square. Friends wishing to share a Jack Kyser story or photo for his memoriam book are encouraged to email their contributions.
