Chamber President & CEO and Board Chair meet with Atlanta-based members

This week, Chamber President & CEO Maria S. Salinas and Board Chair Jerry Neuman, DLA Piper LLP, traveled to Atlanta to meet with Chamber members based in the city, including The Home Depot, The Coca-Cola Company and Delta Air Lines. Chamber hears updates on SB 1 funding and P3 reauthorization
At the Transportation & Goods Movement Council, California Transportation Commission (CTC) Executive Director Susan Bransen discussed steps to ensure accountability for SB 1 funding, CTC's work with Gov. Newsom's administration and joint meetings with the California Air Resources Board. Bransen also reflected on the ongoing Road Charge pilot program and the need to address the Highway Trust Fund's insolvency. Mark Kempton, principal at Kempton Strategies, shared ongoing efforts for P3 reauthorization since its expiration in 2017. Kempton leads a group working with legislators and engineers to discuss obstacles facing reauthorization. SEE THE PHOTOS.
SCAQMD voter authorization efforts
On Wednesday, South Coast Air Quality Management District's (SCAQMD) Executive Officer Wayne Nastri gave an overview of the District's efforts to incentivize and fund clean air efforts to reach ozone attainment by 2023 and 2031. The District will need between $1.5 to $2 billion annually to incentivize adoption of cleaner vehicles. Given the shortfall, Nastri discussed the District's recent work to introduce a bill that would create a special voting district to encompass the air district. Its authorization would clear the way for a potential voter-led effort to add a 30-year sales tax ballot measure to the 2020 ballot throughout the District.
Giving Tree Treatment Center opens in Studio City
The Giving Tree Treatment Center in Studio City has opened its doors to provide a safe haven for those struggling with addiction and substance abuse. The Chamber held an official ribbon cutting for the center late last month. The center offers a highly personalized level of care, with an open, family setting for clients in need. LEARN MORE.
Trends in global logistics

Chamber and UCLA Anderson co-host Latin American Business Conference
Last Friday, the Chamber and UCLA Anderson welcomed more than 350 guests attending the 2019 Latin American Business Conference, entitled "A Road Map for Latin America's Future." This event marked the fourth consecutive year attracting senior government officials and prominent business executives representing various industry sectors and countries. Speakers discussed and covered diverse and controversial topics, including "The Region's Economic, Political and Social Prospects"; "Strategies for Trade, Investment, Governance"; and "Infrastructure and Building Successful Organizations in Latin America."
Bixel Exchange hosts joint coworking day at Indie Desk
Bixel Exchange's Startup LAunch tech SBDC partnered with Inspiralia and Acelera.LA to host their first coworking day of the year last week at Indie Desk. The conversation focused on federal contracts and federal grants, both funds that require no paying back and no equity. In addition, their startup founders had the opportunity to mock interview Bixel Exchange's L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline applicants in the first joint session between Bixel's two programs.
Chamber diplomat group meets with California State Board of Food and Agriculture
Nearly 30 members of the Chamber's Diplomatic & Commercial Officers Group met with senior representatives from the California State Board of Food and Agriculture this week to learn about the state's agriculture sector, international strategies department and best practices for agricultural exports and imports. Speakers included Josh Eddy, executive director of the CA State Board, Dr. Amrith Gunasekara, science advisor to Secretary Ross at the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and Brooks Ohlson, director of the Sacramento Regional Center for International Trade Development.
