LAX MODERNIZATION TAKES STEP FORWARD

The Chamber applauds L.A. City Councilmembers Ed Reyes, Tom LaBonge, Jose Huizar, Mitch Englander and Joe Buscaino for choosing good jobs, economic growth and safety by voting for Los Angeles International Airport modernization this week. The joint meeting of L.A. City Council's Trade Commerce & Tourism and Planning & Land Use committees resulted in a 5-1 vote in favor of moving the north runway, and providing transportation and terminal improvements to give Los Angeles a safe and competitive world class airport for the 21st century. The full L.A. City Council will consider this issue next. Contact Ruben Gonzalez, 213.580.7568.

Metro projects to receive funding
President Barack Obama's budget includes $130 million to help fund two of Metro's big rail projects: the Purple Line Extension and the Regional Connector. The funds will help supplement Measure R funds. Congress must still approve the budget. The Chamber has strongly advocated for this for the last three years in Washington, D.C. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.

Chamber speaks at City Planning Commission
Today, the Chamber spoke at the L.A. City Planning Commission (CPC) to express concern over restrictions on Quick-Service Restaurants (QSRs) proposed in the West Adams community plan. The Chamber encouraged the CPC to consider the jobs, management training, and entrepreneurial opportunities that QSRs bring to increase economic development in historically underserved communities in South Los Angeles. CEQA reform case studies needed
The Statewide California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Working Group coalition is collecting case studies that show the need for meaningful CEQA reform. Frequent targets of these abuses include improvements such as public works, affordable housing, schools, transportation, transit, hospitals and renewable energy. We need your help to identify more case studies to profile. View case studies development to date. If you have case studies to share, contact Amanda Frew, 916.443.0872.

L.A. Jobs PAC endorses Nury Martinez
This week, the L.A. Jobs Political Action Committee (PAC), sponsored by the Chamber, announced its endorsement of Nury Martinez for L.A. City Council District 6. “Nury has an extensive record of public service as an advocate for job creation, education and community safety,” said L.A. Area Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. Contact Ruben Gonzalez, 213.580.7568.

Chamber members join Gov. Brown for trade mission to China
Chamber Board members Philip Recht, Mayer Brown LLP, Dennis Rodriguez, Siemens, Melinda Yee Franklin, United Airlines, and William Allen, Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, are in China this week as part of Gov. Jerry Brown's seven-day trade mission aimed at raising investment dollars for California. China is California's third-largest trading partner, behind Mexico and Canada. In his first official trip abroad since taking office in 2011, Gov. Brown is expected to promote California exports, tourism and greenhouse gas reduction policies. Contact Carlos J. Valderrama, 213.580.7570.

Leadership L.A. explores art and culture in Los Angeles
On Friday, Leadership L.A. 2013 heard from leaders on how investment in the arts is an important component to the 21st century workforce. "It all starts with somebody's spark of imagination. How do you create something that is 300 feet long, 200 feet wide and includes various electronic components? That all comes from imagination as a designer. For us, that is why we are investing and preparing kids for the future,” said James Herr (SCLN Board Member & LSC ’06), The Boeing Co., on why it's important to continue to support art-based programs in underserved communities. Contact April Tam, 213.580.7526.
