OVERHEARD

"This project is about three things: growing jobs in two of the region's most important industries, tourism and entertainment; providing new housing opportunities in a job packed area; and tying those two things to transit."

Tom Smith, Senior Vice President, NBCUniversal/West Coast Real Estate, at the joint Land Use & Mobility and Environmental Sustainability Councils meeting Wednesday.

CHAMBER EXAMINES FOUR MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN LOS ANGELES. With the proposed addition of Farmer's Field and the hotels that will be built, Los Angeles would be among the top five convention destinations in the country, said Tim Leiweke, president & CEO, Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), at a joint meeting of the Chamber's Environmental Sustainability and Land Use & Mobility Councils. Representatives from NBCUniversal, Thomas Properties Group and the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles also gave presentations on three other significant development proposals in the city. L.A. Area Chamber and U.S. Chamber ready to engage with President Obama
In a Wall Street Journal article, "Obama Reaches for Corporate Support" published this week, Chamber Board Chair Joseph Czyzyk, Mercury Air Group, Inc., discussed regulatory reform and said things can get done more with "cooperation than opposition" when working with President Barack Obama's Administration. Southern California is home to one of the largest concentrations of Armenians outside of Yerevan, Armenia. "This is what makes L.A. the most unique place in the world—and what makes a global economy," said L.A. City Councilmember Paul Krekorian on Tuesday at the Southern California Leadership Network's Global Connections dinner featuring the Armenian-American community. "I encourage more cross-cultural connections like this that take advantage of our immigrant communities' assets." Panelists included UCLA Professor Emeritus Richard Hovannisian; Armenian Bar Association Treasurer Sara Bedirian; Oshin Keshishian, Armenian Observer and moderator Yasmin Alpay, Armenian General Benevolent Union (LLA ’10). Architecture firm Gensler moves to downtown L.A.
Gensler recently announced it will be relocating from Santa Monica after 20 years to downtown Los Angeles. The firm will move into City National Plaza in October. The Chamber-advocated, new three-year gross receipts tax holiday for all new businesses opening or moving to Los Angeles played a major role in Gensler's relocation. Read more.

Automobile Club of Southern California launches mileage discount program
The Interinsurance Exchange of the Automobile Club's verified mileage (or pay-as-you-drive) discount program recently launched. The program is the first approved by the state insurance commissioner, the first to take effect, and one of only two such programs approved in California. The program is available to insured drivers who agree to report their odometer readings at the beginning and end of each policy period, or who agree to install a small "telematics" device in their vehicle. Policy premiums for those in the program will be up to 10.5 percent lower than for policyholders who continue to estimate their miles driven. Read more.
