OVERHEARDs

"When I started Toms, I had this spontaneous idea to help children in Argentina — and it felt good. But in the six years since then, I have realized that giving doesn't just feel good, it's also a good business practice. You can attract some amazing talent when you're offering people an opportunity to be a part of something bigger.”

—Blake Mycoskie, founder and chief shoe giver, TOMS, and recipient of the Civic Entrepreneur of the Year award at the Southern California Visionaries Awards Luncheon on Tuesday.

"You need patience and persistence to be successful for capitalizing on government contracting.”

—Brandon Shamim, Chamber Board member and Chair of the Small Business Council, at the 2011 Annual Small Business Summit on the art of bidding and procurement on Wednesday at the Chamber.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VISIONARIES LUNCHEON CELEBRATES DYNAMIC LEADERSHIP

More than 300 of the region’s top business, government and nonprofit leaders came together on Tuesday for the Southern California Visionaries Awards Luncheon at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. Southern California Leadership Network alumni and guests honored several leaders who provided a glimpse to their approach in inspiring positive change. "What we need today are bridge leaders," said Dr. Cynthia Telles, UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute Spanish Speaking Psychosocial Clinic. Honorees agreed that leaders need to help our youth find the appropriate skill-sets to build those bridges and be prepared for the future. Chamber testifies on overhaul of commercial trash pickups
The Los Angeles City Council voted this week to issue a five year notice to commercial waste haulers, which notifies them of the City's intention to create a franchise system for commercial waste haulers. The Chamber testified to support an open system that allows all haulers to compete for contracts and opposes an exclusive system that would put small haulers out of business and potentially increase rates for property owners. Chamber-supported Hoover Power Act headed to the White House
The Hoover Power Allocation Act is now headed for President Barack Obama's signature. The bill allocates and expands the availability of emission-free hydroelectric power generated at Hoover Dam through 2067. The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power uses the hydroelectric power generated at Hoover Dam to support the Department's integration of renewable energy resources, such as wind and solar power. Following initial passage by both chambers, the House recently passed a resolution to fix a few technical issues in the bill. It has now cleared the final congressional hurdle and heads to the president's desk. The Chamber advocated for the Hoover Power Act during its annual ACCESS Washington, D.C. event this year.
