STEP FORWARD FOR TRANSPORTATION. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has approved the Westside Subway Extension and the Regional Connector for entry into the preliminary engineering process. The approval moves these key Metro projects closer to construction.
Both are expected to be part of the New Starts program — the federal government's primary financing vehicle for locally-planning mass transit investments. The first stages of construction on both projects would begin in mid-to-late 2012.

Chamber helps celebrate new hotel acquisition in Universal City
Chinese developer Shenzhen New World Co., Ltd. recently purchased the Sheraton Universal Hotel. During the past decade, Shenzhen New World has invested more than $1.42 billion in projects worldwide including the purchase of the Los Angeles Marriott Downtown. The Chamber is an advocate for direct foreign investment and has worked closely with former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in attracting foreign investment to the Los Angeles region. Friends of the Hollywood Central Park Foundation to honor Chamber
The Chamber is being honored this week by the Friends of the Hollywood Central Park Foundation for its support of the Hollywood Central Park project. The project would place a "cap" over the 101 Freeway between Santa Monica Blvd. and Hollywood Blvd. and create a 44-acre green space in the middle of Hollywood. In addition to the Chamber, the foundation will also honor Congressmember Xavier Becerra; Gerdo Aquino, president of SWA Group and associate professor of landscape architecture, USC; and Helen Bernstein High School Principal Maria Elena Rico. Torlakson Transition Team
Chamber Senior Vice President of Education & Workforce Development David Rattray will serve as co-chair of the Transition Advisory Team of State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. Rattray will help lead a transition team charged with providing strategic advice for Torlakson during his first few months in office as he identifies key issues impacting California schools. Rattray will be joined by co-chair Linda Darling-Hammond, the Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education at Stanford University.

Forum on Corporate Community Investment
The U.S. Chamber's Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC), Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and Northrop Grumman Corporation recently announced the first of a series of forums as part of its Corporate Community Investment initiative "Listening Tour."
