2020 ACCESS Sacramento Event Information
The session opened with California Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins who provided insights on our state’s path to recovery. She shared that California has paid out $50 billion in unemployment benefits to date, compared to $542 million paid during the 2008 economic recession. We then engaged in a meaningful dialogue on business, jobs recovery and the digital divide with Abby Snay of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency and Gene Sykes of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Task Force on Business and Jobs Recovery. The discussion revealed that of the six million children in California K-12 public schools, at least 1 million have no access to broadband internet and highlighted the innovative collaborations between schools, communities and the private sector to address the inequity.
