Thank you Mayor, Disney and L.A. County

Today was a good day for the young people of Los Angeles. At a news conference this morning in support of HIRE-LA's Youth, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti reaffirmed his commitment to hiring 10,000 young people this summer and brought with him partners in government and business to announce their support. The Chamber has co-sponsored HIRE-LA’s Youth with the mayor’s office for nine years.

Valerie Jarrett, President Obama’s senior advisor, joined Mayor Garcetti at the Watts Youth Opportunity Center and emphasized the president's commitment to summer jobs and HIRE-LA's Youth. President Obama has requested more money for summer youth jobs in his 2015 budget.

Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, led the charge for the private sector by pledging $1 million from Disney to HIRE-LA's Youth for the summer of 2014. L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas followed with a commitment of $6.8 million from the County Board of Supervisors.

Iger applauded Valerie Jarrett, Mayor Garcetti and Supervisor Ridley-Thomas for their leadership and encouraged other companies in the Los Angeles area to join in this effort to put our young people to work this summer. Other businesses that have already pledged jobs or financial support for five or more jobs for the summer of 2014 include: AT&T; Cedars-Sinai Health System; H&R Block; JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A.; Kaiser Permanente; Los Angeles World Airports; McDonald’s Corporation; Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza, Pacific Park; Ross Dress for Less; UPS; Vons, a Safeway Company and Wells Fargo.

Summer job applicants are recruited through local schools, the City's Workforce Development system, the Community College District and community based organizations. In preparation for job placement, youth are given the opportunity to earn a Work Readiness Certificate, which gives them work-ready skills.

Providing summer jobs for young people is an investment in their careers and our economy. For more information on how you can participate, contact Maria Nieto, 213.580.7599.

And that's The Business Perspective.

I'm a supporter of HIRE-LA's Youth-they do a tremendous job preparing the youth...but how many of those opportunities are in the San Fernando Valley?
