Congress Authorizes Trade Promotion Authority With Bipartisan Support

Last week’s Congressional approval of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) was a major victory for President Obama, U.S. businesses that export, and the working men and women of America. With a bipartisan vote, the U.S. Congress prioritized economic growth and job creation here at home. In doing so, Congressional leaders proved they could tune out opposition on the left and the right and take action on an important measure to move our economy forward.

California will be one of the primary beneficiaries of TPA and trade agreements to open markets for American-made goods and services worldwide. To access specific data on the benefits of trade to California, click here.

The business and agriculture community’s support in California and across the country for TPA played an important role in the final votes. Members of Congress heard from thousands of small businesses and exporters in manufacturing, professional services and agriculture.

The Chamber thanks the California Members of Congress who voted for Trade Promotion Authority. Please join us in saying thank you when you see these Members of Congress during the recess period that begins this week. Each of them made the visionary and courageous decision not to economically isolate America from 95 percent of the world’s population who live in other countries.

The Obama administration, and Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress deserve great credit for setting aside partisanship and working together to pass this bill. It should serve as a model for how important things can get done going forward.
