Building an Inclusive Economy with an Inclusive Workforce

For years, the Chamber has been involved in bold efforts to expand workforce opportunities, including the reintegration of young adults with previous criminal justice involvement. The Chamber has a history of bringing issues like this to the forefront because of the economic impact to our business community.
In June, the Los Angeles Times ran an article stating that there are now “more job openings in the U.S. than unemployed workers to fill them.” As the state and region reaps the benefits of a full-employment economy, businesses must do more to attract and retain talent.
Earlier this year, the Chamber, in partnership with Los Angeles County’s Youth@Work program, launched Creating Opportunities and Real Experiences (C.O.R.E.) Internship Program. This program is aimed at young adults, ages 18-24, with previous criminal justice involvement to help them obtain paid career exploration and on-the-job work experiences. We are proud of this partnership because we know that an internship is the path to greater employment opportunities.
The Chamber’s role with C.O.R.E. is to certify interns as “work ready” through our Smart Justice program, a focused training on employment fundamentals. We assist in finding the best fit with an employer and once a match is made, L.A. County, through its America’s Job Center, becomes the employer of record. This partnership creates an opportunity for companies to expand their workforce and for individuals who are eager to work with a fresh start.
