Renewing the California Dream
January 11, 2019
by Maria S. Salinas
Happy New Year! For me, the start to 2019 included being present for the transition of power in our great state. I joined several Angelenos in attending Gov. Newsom's swearing in ceremony earlier this week. The threat of rain didn't stop thousands from coming out, and it didn't put a damper on the excitement of the crowd as we watched the now Governor take his place as the 40th to lead the Golden State.
Gov. Newsom has laid out a bold vision for our State – citing a renewal of the California dream for the next generation. I reflect on those words and think about the future that I want for my own children, a future that includes the affordability of living in the sunshine state.
With the release of the Governor’s first budget, we’re encouraged by his plans to balance investments in housing production, emergency shelters, and supportive housing, with policy proposals to streamline approvals and enforce regional housing goals. We are also excited with the appointments to his administration, and applaud his appointment of Lenny Mendonca the new chief economic and business advisor.
We also commend Gov. Newsom’s proposed investments in education, which will allow our businesses to acquire a skilled and qualified workforce. The new budget proposes significant cradle-to-career investments particularly in early childhood education, investments in higher education, immigration related services, California College Promise and financial aid, which were significant parts of the cradle-to-career policy agenda that the Chamber proposed to the Governor’s transition team.
I am enthused about the opportunity to engage with the new administration and carry the voice of our L.A. business community to Sacramento. We are eager to work with Gov. Newsom and his administration on his goal of renewing the California Dream.
