Volunteers Doing Their Part

I’ve been in awe of the work of so many volunteers working on the homeless count these past couple of days. Today, I met with one of our civic leaders from the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder’s office, who shared his volunteer experience in the Southeast cities and his passion for doing his part.
Thanks to more than 7,000 volunteers who canvased more than 80 cities and 200 communities across L.A. County over a three-day period, we will now have an updated understanding of homelessness in the region and, most importantly, we’ll be able to direct resources where they’re needed most.
For more than a decade, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the United Way of Greater Los Angeles to form the Business Leaders Task Force on Homelessness to develop Home for Good – a bold plan to end chronic and veteran homelessness in Los Angeles. Through those efforts, as well as our efforts to champion measures like H and HHH, we have made progress.
But still, thousands of men, women and families will sleep on the streets of L.A. County tonight. And we believe that ending homelessness isn’t just the right thing to do; it is in the best interest of the business community — and we must all do our part.
If we’re going to continue to make progress toward ending homelessness in L.A., we must continually seek to understand and gauge the problem. That’s why this week’s Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count is so very important.
By continuing to work together, we can help the most vulnerable in our society, while improving the quality of life for all our communities.
