Measure EE - Vote No on June 4
May 31, 2019
by Maria S. Salinas
On Tuesday, voters in Los Angeles will head to the polls to vote in a special election. Measure EE – a $500 million dollar per year parcel tax for Los Angeles Unified School District – will be the only item on the ballot (unless you're in CD12).
The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce is an ardent supporter of public education and has a long-standing history of supporting efforts to increase funding for schools; however, we do not support this Measure and urge you to vote NO.
- Measure EE offers NO guarantee that these new funds will go toward reducing classroom size or adding more nurses and librarians in schools. While proponents suggest this, the ballot measure was not written in this manner.
- There is NO independent oversight written in the measure that strengthens accountability. Other voter approved tax measures that we have supported in the past have strong and specific language about oversight.
- There is NO plan to address unfunded pension obligations, increasing healthcare costs or cost structure of a large organization with declining student enrollment.
We agree with the goal of having a strong public education system – it's essential and we will keep fighting for it. But Measure EE is not the answer and we need to say NO to this rushed tax measure.
Vote No on Measure EE on Tuesday, June 4.
And if you're in CD 12, we encourage you to vote for John Lee, who was endorsed by the Chamber's L.A. Jobs PAC because we believe his deep-knowledge of city government, familiarity with all the diverse communities in the district and his collaborative approach make him the strongest candidate to represent the 12th District on the City Council.
