At the Energy, Water & Environmental Sustainability Council, Jeff Kightlinger, general manager and CEO of Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Met), spoke with Chamber members about the future of water supplies in Southern California. Met is the largest municipal water provider in the country, serving customers across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura counties. Kightlinger reviewed California’s history of water projects since the 1960s, and the impacts of climate change on our imported water supply. He discussed the path forward for Delta conveyance under Gov. Gavin Newsom, with a plan to likely be rolled out in October and be further refined by the end of 2019. On the local supply side, Kightlinger discussed Met’s water recycling demonstration project in Carson. The partnership between Met and Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County will demonstrate the ability to produce high quality water from purified wastewater, helping to increase local water supplies.
