Reflections on a Bold Year

Time has flown by. This weeks marks one year since I officially began my role as President & CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. As I approached this day, I have reflected on the past year, the work we’ve accomplished together and the course we’ve been able to set for the future.

From my first day, and each that has passed since, I’ve seen the vital role this Chamber plays in the region, and the even more crucial role we can play as architects of its future.
A year ago this week, I issued my first Business Perspective post, in which I communicated four primary focus areas for my first year.

I spoke of the importance of being global in our identity, our reach and our work. From traveling to Asia with Mayor Garcetti to hosting delegations from around the world, we’ve strengthened our international ties with diplomats, foreign leaders and business executives from across the globe. And now, with our work in the international business community, we have a great platform to champion global L.A. to the world and to expand L.A. business beyond our borders.

I shared my goal of advocating for a business-friendly L.A. At our Inaugural Dinner, I spoke about “business as a force for good.” The first time I heard it, from the Dean of Business from my alma mater, I knew she was right. My experience has taught me that when business thrives and jobs are created, our communities prosper. Public policy that can drive economic growth and job creation is key. Thus, our policy makers play an integral role in creating an ecosystem where businesses can start and grow. I’ve had a great year engaging with policy makers from our local elected officials to state and national leaders on important topics to our region.

That leads me to harnessing L.A.’s spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. We’ve convened small business leaders and entrepreneurs, expanded access to opportunities with our focus on procurement and helped grow the talent pipeline through our various education and workforce initiatives. There is more work to be done to stay ahead of the shifts and changes in the economy; I look forward to collaborating with partners to grow our local economy.

Lastly, I also shared with you my focus on collaboration and building partnerships. We’ve accomplished this goal by first listening and learning – here within the Chamber’s office, as well as out in every corner of the region. We’ve reached out to, convened and engaged partners from across the region and in every industry; and we’ve heard directly from those members and community leaders who not only look to the Chamber for leadership, but also contribute to our success. Now, we’re focused on leveraging our collective power to bring this community together in ways that will drive us all forward.

Looking forward to the year ahead, I am excited to build upon the legacy of the Chamber. We are completing a strategic plan and I look forward to sharing more in the near future. I am confident in the Chamber’s role in building that bold new future for Los Angeles, and I look forward to working with you to accomplish that vision. Thank you for a great first year!
