Supporting the USMCA

Global trade is key to the Los Angeles region. Since the renegotiation of NAFTA began, the L.A. Area Chamber has supported good faith talks and has advocated for the passage of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the resulting new trade agreement. Earlier this year, when the Chamber visited Washington, D.C., global trade and ratification of the USMCA were prominent issues our delegation supported.

On Monday, the Chamber hosted Hon. Jesús Seade, Undersecretary for North America for the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As Mexican trade representative, he was lead negotiator for Mexico on the USMCA, signed by the three countries in 2018. Seade provided an exclusive briefing on aspects of the USMCA, highlighting achievements in addressing labor components. He provided valuable insight on the current relationship between the Mexico-California and Mexico-Los Angeles regions. The USMCA has been ratified both by Mexico and Canada and is pending approval by Congress.

We emphasized the fact that Mexico continues to be California’s No. 1 export market, purchasing 17 percent of all California exports. The Chamber fully supports the passage of the USMCA and has urged Congress to move quickly, along with many other business organizations in the nation.
