On Sept. 19, the Chamber's Los Angeles Sustainability Executives Roundtable (LASER) hosted a quarterly roundtable at The Resort at Playa Vista focused on the intersection of clean energy and real estate development. Attendees received a behind-the-curtain tour of the facility's combined heat and power demo project from the private and public sector project leads. The tour focused on the combined heat and power cogeneration system that provides heating for the swimming pools as well as auxiliary electricity for the facility, the architectural design passive cooling system and green roof elements that provide and support energy efficiency, and the solar photovoltaic array that provides renewable electricity to the facility. The project will serve to inform future sustainable development and cross-sector collaboration in the L.A. region and beyond.

The day also featured a panel of specialists from each organization involved in the demo project, from ideation to execution. The panel was moderated by Ben Stapleton, executive director, USGBC-LA, and included John Zinner, LEED consultant and Playa Vista mitigation monitor; Naseema Asif, architect and project lead, RCH Studios; Joe Shiau, engineer and emerging technology specialist, SoCalGas; and Dawn Suskin, executive director, Playa Vista Parks & Landscape Corporation. The panel emphasized comprehensive stakeholder input and cross-sector collaboration, cogeneration to meet energy needs, and the importance of projected climate fluctuations when planning and modeling new projects and elements of design.
