The California Legislature wrapped up its two-year session on Aug. 31. This past legislative session, we saw a number of measures to address the impact that Californians are feeling from COVID-19. The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce advocated on behalf of the business community on a number of bills to ensure a better business environment, opportunities in workforce development, housing and several other topics. Our efforts are the result of the thoughtful and intentional engagement of the business and community leaders.
The L.A. Area Chamber is mindful of the intersectionality of our communities that make the Los Angeles region so unique. In Los Angeles County, 93 percent of businesses have fewer than 20 employees. Nationwide, small businesses account for 99 percent of all employers in the U.S., employing more than 56 million people. The Chamber has worked hard to ensure that small and micro businesses -- many that are women and minority owned -- are not overlooked in the midst of dueling health and economic crises.
The close of the legislative session left the Chamber determined to keep advocating for a business-friendly region. Maintaining strong relationships with our leaders in Sacramento is key to our advocacy success – past, present and future. Most progress happens as a result of the day-to-day persistence of work rather than in monumental strides. And, our best partners in our advocacy efforts are the small businesses themselves that are experiencing the challenges of a closed economy. Small businesses are our lifeblood, and the Chamber will continue to work so that California is prioritizing this segment of our economy with health guidelines, reopening strategies, and economic relief programs.
For this session, there are 428 bills pending the governor's decision. He has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto said bills. Our work isn’t finished just yet but we hear you and we are here for you. The Chamber remains committed to being the convener of legislators and business leaders to develop holistic policies to help our region thrive. Please
join the Chamber’s Public Policy Councils to participate in shaping and advocating for policy across all levels of government. Together, we can strengthen the business voice.
