Beyond Election 2020: Engaging at the Local Level

While many said the 2020 election was the most important in recent history, it should go without saying that ALL elections are important, whether or not it is a midterm or presidential year. The record-breaking turnout of this recent election surpassed any in recent history. Political experts will analyze this election for years to come.

Of course, voting for President and Vice President is crucial. But of equal importance, if not more so, are the "down ballot" candidates that determine our state and local elected representation. Our local elected officials are the decision-makers that play a critical role in our communities, city councils and school boards. The local races impact the direction of our neighborhoods, our schools and services like public safety.

This election, in L.A. County, voters approved Measure J, amending the County of Los Angeles' charter to require that no less than 10 percent of
the County's general fund be appropriated to community programs and alternatives to incarceration. Voters also approved the Los Angeles Unified School District's Measure RR
-- a $7 billion bond that will be used to upgrade, modernize and replace school facilities and technology.
We should approach each election with the same fervor as we did for the 2020 election cycle. Each election gives us the opportunity to make our voices heard on health care, immigration, equal opportunity, infrastructure, jobs and education, among many other issues. Who do you want to represent you? Where should your tax dollars be invested? Decisions made by local elected officials could impact the ability for businesses to create jobs or for our economy to grow.
