Covid-19 Vaccine Brings Cautious Hope
Welcoming the new year with high hopes for the year ahead is overshadowed by the epic health crisis that we are currently experiencing. Next month will be one of the toughest as we see the result of holiday gatherings and the increase in new cases. The stress on our health care system is overwhelming and heartbreaking. We have never been in a crisis where we are talking about “rationing” care.
Despite the health challenges, many are hopeful the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines will lead us on a path to good health and a return to somewhat of a normal state. Today, the economy is handcuffed by the virus, but as the vaccines become more readily available, the economy will once again be ready for a restart.

California’s initial vaccine allotment was 1.3 million doses with an additional 611,500 vaccine doses coming within the next week and, in LA County, there are 213,000 vaccines.
In LA County, the COVID-19 vaccine is being made available to individuals in three phases, until larger vaccine supplies become available.
- Phase 1A - Healthcare personnel, based on a tiered structure, and long-term care facility residents
- Phase 1B – Persons 75 and older and frontline essential workers
- Phase 1C – Persons 65 to 74, persons 16 to 64 with high-risk medical conditions.
Dr. Barbara Ferrer, LA County Public Health Director outlined the vaccine prioritization at this week’s L.A. County Board of Supervisor’s meeting. A detail listing of the Phases for LA County is outline: Vaccine Prioritization & Allocation.
