Legislative Session Resumes in Sacramento
August 6, 2021
by Maria S. Salinas
The California State Legislature is set to return from their summer recess to continue the legislative session, expected to conclude September 10, 2021. This past year, the Legislature took a variety of policy and budget actions centered on economic recovery. To date, the Senate has passed 66% of the 828 bills introduced, and the Assembly has passed 50% of the 1,593 bills they have submitted. When the Legislature returns on August 16, it will have one month to take action on the remaining 1,342 bills.
The Chamber‘s policy agenda includes legislation on topics ranging from housing, to transportation, to sustainability, and education. We testified on a number of issues which were identified as a priority for the business community.
The Chamber has also been successful on bills like the Conformity Bill, AB 80, which brought much needed relief to the small business community. It allows small businesses who received relief through a PPP or EIDL loan to have that funding excluded from their taxable income. The Governor signed the bill in Los Angeles, highlighting a total economic relief package of $6.2 billion to small business recovery.
Just last week I had the opportunity to celebrate one of our important legislative efforts, the Homeless Hiring Tax Credit, alongside State Senator Maria Elena Durazo and Assemblymembers Richard Bloom and Isaac Bryan in Leimert Park. With this legislation, small businesses are incentivized to hire homeless persons to fill their positions. We are committed to creating a community which thrives because of job growth, innovation, and equitable opportunity, and I’m proud to say our advocacy record reflects that.
As the Legislature returns, the Chamber will continue its engagement in Sacramento. Meeting with elected officials is essential to the Chamber’s work, and this month, our virtual visit to the state’s capital, ACCESS Sacramento, is set for August 16, 2021.
ACCESS Sacramento is an opportunity to represent the interests of the Los Angeles region. Register here.
