Engaging in the Electoral Process

Los Angeles is at a political turning point. This next election will be significant to the direction of the city, county, and school districts of Los Angeles, as well as the state legislature. We have been studying and anticipating the expected transitions for almost two years, knowing that term limits and redistricting would result in the changes we are seeing today. However, while we expected to see change beginning this election cycle, we did not think it would be as significant as what we are seeing today.
The primary election is set for June 7, but because ballots will be mailed to all voters, those ballots will hit your mailbox starting on May 9 – just a little over a month from now. This will be L.A.’s first election with consolidated local, state, and federal races occurring at the same time. This consolidation along with the all-mail ballots will produce never before seen voter turnout for local candidates.
With so much change in the political landscape of our region, it is imperative that we engage civically and understand the platforms of the candidates. The urgency to engage, listen, and learn has never mattered more than this upcoming election with issues ranging from housing, transportation, and education, all dictated by the people we elect.
The Chamber is taking part in educating our members on the issues through forums to deepen our understanding of the issues and candidates for elected office. If we are to see progress, we need to ensure that we learn and understand. Engaging in our elections ensures our community has a voice in shaping the policies and practices which impact our families and communities. We need Los Angeles to be globally competitive and a region which fosters job creation, innovation, and economic growth.
