Global Trade at a Crossroads: Uncertainty Threatens Los Angeles’ Economic Future

Los Angeles has long been recognized for its global influence. Our regional economy thrives on international trade, investment, and collaboration across various sectors, including advanced manufacturing, film and entertainment, clean technology, and aerospace. This global reach is evident in the diverse network of businesses that call Southern California home, many of which flourish due to their access to international markets.

But today, this strength is being tested. The ongoing imposition of tariffs, combined with growing uncertainty surrounding U.S. trade policy, is undermining confidence in the very systems that keep our economy moving. For Los Angeles, the country’s largest gateway for goods and a hub for innovation, the stakes have never been higher.

Last week, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce proudly hosted the 99th Annual World Trade Week Conference, the nation’s premier event dedicated to global commerce. For nearly a century, this gathering has brought together business leaders, trade experts, and government officials who share a commitment to open markets, international cooperation, and economic opportunity.

The message from this year’s conference was clear: tariff uncertainty is not merely a policy concern — it’s an obstacle to growth. Rising costs, delayed investment decisions, and disrupted supply chains are affecting businesses at every level. It’s not just large importers or exporters feeling the impact. Small and mid-sized enterprises — the backbone of our economy — are often the least equipped to absorb or adapt to volatile trade conditions.

This situation is particularly concerning for Los Angeles, where over 40% of jobs are tied to international commerce, either directly or indirectly. Our ports, airports, and logistics infrastructure are world-class, but without stable trade policies, even the best systems cannot protect us from economic disruption. At the Chamber, we remain committed to advocating for global trade as a catalyst for inclusive growth. We continue to represent the businesses that depend on the free and fair flow of goods, services, and ideas.

We strongly urge policymakers at all levels to engage with the business community, acknowledge the long-term risks associated with erratic trade measures, and implement strategies that support competitiveness, innovation, and global leadership. Los Angeles is more than just a gateway; it is a global city. Let’s safeguard that legacy by advancing trade policies that promote stability, encourage growth, and strengthen our connections with the world.
