When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted Emergency Use Authorization to two COVID-19 vaccinations in December, less than a year after the pandemic began, it marked a major step toward ending the scourge that, so far, has taken more than 400,000* American lives. However, we have seen that having authorized vaccines and getting those vaccines into peoples’ arms are two very different things. We have also seen that some of the hardest hit communities will not be among the first to receive the vaccines.

The inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris marks a new chapter in our country's history. While there were not the traditional crowds, parades or celebratory events, we witnessed peaceful transfer of power. President Biden called for unity and spoke about the importance of our country's leadership as well as acknowledging the work ahead.

Last Friday, as is constitutionally required, Governor Newsom unveiled his proposed budget for California for the fiscal year beginning, July 1, 2021 and ending June 30, 2022. The budget outlines historic investments in education, vaccine distribution systems, small business recovery and infrastructure.

Welcoming the new year with high hopes for the year ahead is overshadowed by the epic health crisis that we are currently experiencing. Next month will be one of the toughest as we see the result of holiday gatherings and the increase in new cases. The stress on our health care system is overwhelming and heartbreaking. We have never been in a crisis where we are talking about “rationing” care.
