In April, it officially became safe for Los Angeles Unified School District to reopen its schools. The Chamber is working to ensure that every organization, business, and community opens as safely as possible, with special emphasis on ensuring the health and safety for children, staff, and faculty within our schools.

The COVID-19 pandemic unveiled the reality of longstanding inequities and disparities in our society. It became clear early in the pandemic that under-resourced communities of color were seeing higher rates of infections, hospitalizations and deaths from the disease. These same communities also experienced increased risk because they were less able to comply with public health recommendations due to circumstances that existed prior to the pandemic, such as living in crowded conditions, serving as essential workers, and relying on public transportation.

Two years ago, I wrote about the new corporate purpose, a statement the Business Roundtable put forward to redefine the purpose of a corporation. It was a recognition that serving customers, employees, suppliers, and communities, as well as shareholders, is a better definition of the role of a major corporation than previous iterations.
