On July 1, the City of Los Angeles will see the most significant turnover of leadership in a dozen years. This turnover should bring new hope and a renewed energy for engagement in the civic arena. I have had the honor of working with many elected leaders across the country in my 40 years representing the business community. Getting a good start is important, which is why I offer our newly elected officials this bit of unsolicited advice.
State Budget Brings Smiles

Democrats and Republicans in the State Capitol had something to smile about this weekend. Democrats used their strong majority to replenish some of the cuts from prior years. And while no Republicans voted for the final budget, many in the minority party were appreciative of Gov. Jerry Brown's frugal approach to the use of unexpected state revenue.

At other times, I get to say thank you to businesses who have taken steps to improve our community and change lives. Today, I want to highlight three companies who have chosen to invest in our region and to create that most precious of commodities … a job.
Lawsuits Seek to Delay Take-Off at LAX

Mayors Richard Riordan, James Hahn and Antonio Villaraigosa all determined that Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) modernization was essential to the future of our city and region. They each put forth a plan to begin the fix and each time that plan was opposed by LAX neighbors. The result has been a two-decade delay in the modernization of LAX and an embarrassment for our city, region and state.
