The inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris marks a new chapter in our country's history. While there were not the traditional crowds, parades or celebratory events, we witnessed peaceful transfer of power. Last Friday, as is constitutionally required, Governor Newsom unveiled his proposed budget for California for the fiscal year beginning, July 1, 2021 and ending June 30, 2022. Welcoming the new year with high hopes for the year ahead is overshadowed by the epic health crisis that we are currently experiencing. Next month will be one of the toughest as we see the result of holiday gatherings and the increase in new cases. The stress on our health care system is overwhelming and heartbreaking. With over 4 million small businesses in California, more than any other state in the country, we can’t ignore the impact of small business employers on our economy. The state estimates that 48.5 percent of our total workforce is employed by the small business sector. In Los Angeles County, small businesses are found in every industry and represent the largest concentration of women and minority owned businesses in the county.
