L.A. Area Chamber Statement on Passage of Race to the Top Legislation

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce applauds the California State Senate for moving quickly to pass SBX5 1 (Romero) and SBX5 2 (Simitian), two bills which would improve public education, make California eligible for federal funding and provide more options for students in low-performing schools.

“The California State Senate has taken a crucial step in improving the future prospects of our students, our business, and our economy by voting in favor of SBX5 1 and 2,” said Gary Toebben, President & CEO, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce.  “We now ask that the Assembly move quickly to take up these important bills that would allow the State to adequately prepare students to compete in a 21st global economy and provide businesses with the talent they need to make our economy competitive.”

The Chamber is especially encouraged by the reform elements and recommends amended language to more fully endorse moving to multiple measures that include authentic assessments to measure application of knowledge.
