LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, joined by Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti and other Cash for College campaign partners awarded more than $600,000 to more than 500 local students heading to college in the fall during the 5th annual Scholarship Awards Reception.
The reception took place Tuesday evening at the Downtown Marriott, where hundreds of college-bound students and their families were recognized for their efforts by city, education and business leaders, all while enjoying photo opportunities, music and food.
“The L.A. Area Chamber has always embraced the role of the business community in preparing tomorrow’s leaders and our city’s future workforce,” said L.A. Area Chamber Chair Matthew Toledo. “The Cash for College Scholarship Awards Reception is a great way to do that because we invite students and their families to celebrate their recent successes, as well as their future successes. In doing so, we are strengthening college-going cultures within families across our community.”
The Cash for College Awards Reception culminates the year-long Cash for College campaign, which kicks off each fall with the College and Career Convention. Last year, more than 13,000 students attended the event, held at the L.A. Convention Center, followed by more than 100 financial aid workshops in the spring. Because of year-round efforts and expansive geographic reach, Cash for College is the leading effort in helping students and their families access financial aid resources for college.
As part of its individual effort to expand college access, the Chamber formed the Russell J. Hammer Scholarship Fund, which funds L.A. Cash for College scholarships. The fund was created in honor of Rusty Hammer, the late President & CEO of the Chamber, who believed that providing educational opportunities for local youth goes hand-in-hand with a prosperous economy and quality of life.
Cash for College would not be possible without the dedication of all partners and supporters involved. Among them are the event sponsor, State Farm; College Access Foundation of California; Bank of America; California Student Aid Commission; The Kresge Foundation; Ralphs; The Sterling Foundation; Los Angeles Dodgers; Los Angeles Kings and USA Funds.
The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of business in L.A. County. Founded in 1888, the Chamber promotes a prosperous economy and quality of life in the Los Angeles region. For more information, visit www.lachamber.com.
