LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce announced today that it has been selected to house the Los Angeles Regional Export Council, a collaborative effort to encourage and assist companies looking to begin or increase trade activity.

The L.A. Area Chamber was recommended by the Brookings Institution in its Los Angeles Metropolitan Export Plan.

“The Chamber is proud to lead this effort, which will result in more business abroad for local businesses,” said L.A. Area Chamber Senior Vice President Carlos Valderrama. “When companies in L.A. tap into opportunities overseas it presents an opportunity for job creation and economic growth.”

The Chamber will be responsible for shaping the council’s structure and referral process; organize quarterly regional export partner meetings; develop and maintain a regional export website; develop target industry and country profiles and reports; and provide research to monitor regional export performance.

Los Angeles is the first of four pilot metro areas to partner with the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program to develop export plans this year. Brookings has identified exports as a key driver of the Next Economy and is working to develop these localized, ground-up plans that will help to elevate exports as a top local economic development priority, while also informing federal policy.

These metro pilots are being developed in partnership with, and as a complement to, the National Export Initiative (NEI).  The NEI was established in 2010 with the goal of doubling U.S. exports over the next five years through export promotion and Government-wide export advocacy.

The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of business in L.A. County. Founded in 1888, the Chamber promotes a prosperous economy and quality of life in the Los Angeles region.  For more information, visit www.lachamber.com.
