LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the legality of Citizen’s Redistricting Commissions, the L.A. Area Chamber releases the following statement:
“The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce applauds the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court upholding the legality and authority of Citizens Redistricting Commissions, like the one in California,” said Gary Toebben, President & CEO.
The Chamber was one of the four original sponsors of California Proposition 11, which was approved by the voters in 2008 and created a citizens redistricting commission. The redistricting commission eliminated the backroom negotiations, which had enabled legislators to draw their own districts and heavily influence the selection of the voters in the districts they represented. The four original sponsors of Proposition 11 that wrote the ballot language and raised the money necessary to generate the signatures to place the proposition on the ballot and win voter approval were the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Common Cause, the League of Women Voters and AARP.
“The citizens of California were indeed the winners in this Supreme Court ruling,” continued Toebben.
The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of business in L.A. County. Founded in 1888, the Chamber promotes a prosperous economy and quality of life in the Los Angeles region. For more information, visit www.lachamber.com.
