Today’s announcement on reopening guidelines for K – 12 education by Governor Newsom and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is devastating news for working parents and small businesses, but public health and safety must come first. Some parents will be forced to make the difficult decision of returning to work or caring for their children. We must ensure that virtual learning is robust and meets the needs of students, especially those economically disadvantaged. Business and government leaders must come together to address the digital divide with urgency. We have the power to keep our communities safe and reduce the rate of infection by wearing a mask, hand washing and following social distancing guidance. Our decisions can save lives and help reopen our schools and economy.
