L.A. AREA CHAMBER STATEMENT ON NOMINATION OF L.A. MAYOR ERIC GARCETTI TO U.S. AMBASSADOR TO INDIA

Today, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was nominated for the Ambassadorship to India by President Biden. The posting will be official upon confirmation by a majority vote of the U.S. Senate.

“We congratulate Mayor Eric Garcetti on his nomination to serve as U.S. ambassador to India,” said L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Maria S. Salinas. “We know Mayor Garcetti will forge relationships to create economic opportunities for the United States, California, and the Los Angeles region.”

In accordance with the City’s Charter, the Los Angeles City Council may call a special election or appoint a successor if a seat is vacated, which would expire in December 2022, at the end of the Mayor’s current term. “Our city faces enormous challenges - COVID 19 recovery, homelessness, housing affordability, and transportation needs, as well as the preparation necessary to host global sporting events,” Salinas said.

“The City’s decisions are critical for a brighter future in Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce strongly supports the appointment of a successor to complete the remaining Mayoral term. We implore the City Council to appoint someone who is not seeking the office of Mayor, but a public servant with the experience in the inner workings of city government who will keep our city on track for success through the 2022 term. With an interim Mayor, voters will be assured that they alone will decide the future of the city when they cast their vote for Mayor in the next election,” Salinas concluded.
