L.A. AREA CHAMBER RESPONDS TO LEAKED CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
October 10, 2022
Racism Has No Place In The Workplace Or In The Halls Of Power.
LOS ANGELES, CA – October 10, 2022 – The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce released a statement today in response to the leaked comments by members of the City Council.
"There is no place for racist comments in public or private discourse. The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce condemns the hateful, insensitive, and disgraceful comments made by Council President Nury Martinez, Councilmembers Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo, and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President, Ron Herrera which were made public through leaked audio.
The Chamber stands for good governance, stewardship, transparency, and integrity in government. Unfortunately, the behavior displayed by these elected officials falls woefully short of the expectations of our organization and what the communities they’ve sworn to serve, deserve. Their statements and failure to intervene or object during the meeting contribute to the continued proliferation of racism and betray the public trust.
As an organization committed to an inclusive future for all, we called for the resignation of the leadership positions of Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmembers Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo. Incidents like this undermine the trust in government and its leadership. Given all the challenges facing Los Angeles, we must hold our elected leaders accountable for their actions and words."
