TOP STORY

CHAMBER CO-HOSTS BINATIONAL MAYORS CONFERENCE
Last month, L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Under Secretary of International Trade Francisco Sánchez hosted the Binational Mayor's Conference at the Chamber. The discussion focused on promoting trade between the United States and Mexico, and the challenges and opportunities of the U.S.- Mexico border. "Mexico is the United States' third largest trading partner and second largest export market," said Sánchez. "In order to achieve full economic recovery, it is imperative that we continue to strengthen this relationship and to ensure it provides both greater opportunities and benefits for all of our peoples." Nine mayors representing cities in California and Baja California were in attendance. Above from left: Mayor of Tijuana Carlos Bustamante, Cynthia Ruiz, Port of Los Angeles, and Sánchez. INSIDE THE CHAMBER
Chamber meets with Dean James Ellis on the future of global leaders
University of Southern California Marshall School of Business Dean James Ellis discussed the entrepreneurial challenges in the global world at the Global Initiatives Council session in November. "Every single trend, as negative as they are, provides the opportunity for our business leaders to capitalize and turn them around," Ellis said. He also touched upon the current curriculum changes USC is implementing to encourage international experiences for their students and foster future global leaders.

Opportunities for careers in international trade

The importance of careers in international trade was highlighted last month when the World Trade Week Education Committee, in partnership with the Los Angeles World Airports, hosted an event at the Flight Path Learning Center for high school educators and counselors from public schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District and other regional school districts. Counselors were introduced to occupations and job opportunities related to the field of international trade and business — ranging from logistics and transportation to specialized fields in global management.

The Chamber and the World Trade Week Committee also recently released a new version of the Roadmap to Careers in International Trade. The publication provides a comprehensive resource of practical information regarding employment opportunities in the field of international trade and showcases individuals who are active in world trade in the Los Angeles region. We appreciate the generous contribution of Microsoft Corporation for their support of this printed publication. View the publication.

Chamber co-hosts U.S.-Korea FTA passage celebration
The Chamber recently participated as a key partner in the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) Conference, co-hosted by KOTRA - Korea Business Center, Los Angeles and the Korea Ministry of Strategy of Finance. The conference provided an in-depth analysis of the FTA agreement, including anticipated customs and regulation changes. The FTA will add $10-$12 billion to the annual U.S. GDP and around $10 billion to annual merchandise exports to Korea — making this the U.S.' most commercially significant FTA in more than 16 years.

Chamber participates in Washington Post Live Forum on exporting
Earlier this month, the Chamber participated in "Exporting for Growth," a Washington Post Live forum at the AT&T Center. Carlos J. Valderrama, senior vice president of Global Initiatives, participated as a panelist for the program, which focused on how small businesses can most efficiently move their products abroad to expand business opportunities. Mary Jordan, editor of Washington Post Live, talked to those who have succeeded in exporting and asked leading experts how small businesses can most efficiently move their products abroad. View highlights from the conference.
