TRADE TIPS

President Barack Obama recently reaffirmed the U.S. open investment policy, a commitment to treat all investors in a fair and equitable manner under the law. Foreign direct investment in the United States increased by 49 percent in 2010, according to the White House Council on Economic Affairs.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke recently announced the launch of SelectUSA, the first coordinated federal effort to aggressively pursue and win new business investment in the United States. Created by Executive Order, SelectUSA is designed to promote the United States as the premier place to do business globally and help to attract, retain and grow business operations in the U.S., spurring economic growth and job creation.

CHAMBER MEETS WITH THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE COOK ISLANDS
Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben and Chamber Senior Vice President of Global Initiatives Carlos J. Valderrama met with Prime Minister of the Cook Islands Henry Puna and government representatives from Cook Islands. The discussion centered around the interest of Puna's administration to seek business partners and investors in areas related to solar and environmental technologies, financial services, tourism, jewelry and port development. Chamber Board Member Ron Rogers, Rogers Ruder Finn, was also in attendance. Chamber meets with U.S. Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary
Late last month, Chamber representatives discussed promoting the National Export Initiative with Assistant Secretary of Manufacturing and Services Nicole Y. Lamb-Hale, International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce (left). Chamber discusses corporate best practices in Foreign Exchange (FX) Risk Management
The Chamber, including members of the Global Initiatives Council, received an update on the state of the current currency exchange market from Michael Hayashida, executive director of FX & Rates Risk Management, J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, N.A. (left) last month as he addressed topics including the Eurozone sovereign debt issues, regulatory changes in China and how they may impact U.S. companies, the investment potential in Brazil, as well as FX risk management “best practices.” View the presentation.

Chamber meets with delegation from Vietnam
Chamber Senior Vice President of Global Initiatives Carlos J. Valderrama spoke to representatives of Global Integration Business Consultants (GIBC), a Vietnamese business organization visiting Los Angeles. Vietnam is Los Angeles' eighth largest trading partner with a total annual trade of $7.5 billion. The delegation discussed matters related to fostering global trade and investment in Southern California. GIBC executives, representing several industry sectors, participated in the Advanced Leadership program for Vietnamese Business Leaders at UCLA Anderson School of Management.

ON YOUR RADAR
Maurice Kogon, director of the El Camino Center for International Trade, Development testified at a House Committee on small business hearing on export strategy in Washington, D.C. in late July. The invitation was prompted by a white paper he wrote on the National Export Initiative (NEI) about a year ago. Included in his testimony were strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the NEI, including the need to increase U.S. exports as a percent of GDP, increasing the number of new exporters, and the need for systematic collaboration with non-federal partners. Pastor served on the National Security Council and as a consultant to the State and Defense Departments.
