Chamber urges legislators to reject protectionist provisions The Chamber sent a letter to legislators this week urging them to reject the Buy American protectionist provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These provisions would have an impact on trade with America's long-standing and most dependable ally, Canada. Canada and the United States have long benefited from the world's most unique economic partnership. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Minority Leader John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell all received the letter. Chamber's Global Initiatives Committee focuses on international economy
The economic outlook for 2009 and 2010 is grim, yet the tough times can result in positive actions, said Jerry Nickelsburg, economist, UCLA Anderson Forecast, at the committee meeting in January. "As activity slows at our ports, there can instead be a focus on the development of the ports," Nickelsburg said. Indicating the strong trade relationships the United States has with other countries, Nickelsburg pointed out that the economic state of some international partners including China and South Korea will depend on U.S. growth.
KOTRA, Port of Los Angeles and Chamber representatives discuss future cooperation Lee Seung Kwon, comptroller for the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), met with representatives of the Chamber and the Port of Los Angeles recently to discuss efforts on developing new partnerships and mutual support for building a prosperous green economy with the city of Los Angeles. President Lee Myung Bak is promoting a package of environmentally-friendly laws tied to economic growth and hopes the assembly will ratify the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement this year. The Chamber is organizing an event in March with KOTRA to showcase alternative energy and is gathering support for the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement.
