Mario Cordero to receive the 2014 Stanley T. Olafson Award
The Chamber announced that Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission Mario Cordero, will be awarded the prestigious Stanley T. Olafson Award at the 88th Annual World Trade Week Kickoff Breakfast on Friday, May 2. Presented each year to an outstanding member of the world trade community in Southern California, the Stanley T. Olafson international trade award recognizes those who have contributed to the advancement of world trade and international relations above and beyond job requirements. In 1926, Stanley T. Olafson, then manager of the World Trade department of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, conceived the idea of a Word Trade Week observance in Southern California, and today the award is named in his honor. | Chamber welcomes Karabuk Chamber of Commerce and Industry chair
 Karabuk Chamber of Commerce Chair Sadat Nama led a trade delegation interested in strengthening commercial and industrial ties between Karabuk and Southern California. Members of the delegation discussed their interest in not only exporting industrial goods to Los Angeles, but also their desire in seeking business opportunities for investment in our region. Karabuk is the capital district of Karabuk Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey.

| Chamber meets with Los Angeles Harbor Commission president
 Last month at the Global Initiatives Council meeting, Ambassador Vilma Martinez, president of the Los Angeles Harbor Commission, discussed the role of the Port of Los Angeles in facilitating international trade and fostering economic growth for the region. "The port is America's gateway to the Pacific Rim, offering efficient connectivity to 14 major freight hubs throughout the United States," Martinez said.

United States Trade Representative (USTR) Michael Froman has re-appointed Carlos J. Valderrama to serve another term with IGPAC. Trade Commissioners Networking Group visits Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator
 In March, 16 members of the Trade Commissioners Networking Group (TCNG) received a private briefing from the Los Angeles CleanTech Incubator Executive Director Fred H. Walti II. The presentation covered the importance of innovation in the Cleantech market as one of the fastest growing markets in the last 10 years. Los Angeles, said Walti, is a pioneer in developing green technologies and is a central hub for Cleantech expansion, having the most start-ups in this industry in California. "Cleantech will touch every aspect of our lives, much like the PC, Internet and mobile technology," said Walti.

Chamber congratulates the Trade Commission of Peru
 On April 3, the Trade Commission of Peru in Los Angeles celebrated the grand opening of its new offices. The Chamber joined many foreign diplomats, including several members of the Chamber's Trade Commissioners Networking Group. Peru is an important trading partner of Los Angeles with bilateral trade surpassing $1 billion in 2012.

Progress and trade opportunities between Chile and the U.S.

January 1, 2014, marked 10 years of the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Chile and the United States. This milestone represents the beginning of a close, successful and beneficial relationship for both countries and their people. Nowadays, the United States is the second largest trading partner of Chile with a 16 percent share in total trade. The U.S. represents the second destination of our exports covering 13 percent of total exports, and also has become the main supplier country with 20 percent of total Chilean imports in 2013. Since the FTA took effect in 2004, bilateral trade between Chile and the United States has increased more than 197 percent. However, the relationship between Chile and the United States goes beyond trade in goods. For example, in terms of services, investments, tourism and development, the FTA has also been beneficial, showing significant progress in those areas. Now that Chile joined the Visa Waiver Program, on March 31, the trade and investments figures could increase significantly considering that U.S expects to receive more than 30 percent Chilean visitors than they did last year, both business people and tourists. Starting Jan. 1, 2015, all trade between Chile and the United States will be duty free, according to the tariff elimination schedule established on the FTA. All these achievements on trade and economic integration that Chile has made with the U.S. is the result of an intense efforts that Chile has been making over these 10 years, to promote our products and services in this market through the five trade commission offices located in the U.S. The challenges that both countries must embrace to development a next level relation are to create new opportunities for exporters and importers, commit to innovation, develop new products and promote value-added services.
