City of L.A. launches Chamber-proposed Web site
The city of Los Angeles unveiled a new one-stop business web portal Thursday. The Web site is a direct result of last year's Access City Hall event when Chamber members told city officials about frustrations with no centralized location for business licensing, contracting and tax information. L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti immediately launched a reform process with the city's Information Technology Agency, which included input from the Chamber. This is part of the Chamber's ongoing efforts to reduce bureaucratic red tape and make it easier for businesses to operate in Los Angeles. Chamber discusses state's budget and fiscal reform
The Chamber’s Business Growth & Tax Policy Committee studied the state’s current budget and discussed reforms aimed at preventing a future fiscal crisis Thursday at the Chamber. The committee agreed service cuts should not be the only source of covering the deficit, but revenue increases and cost reduction in wages and pension obligations should play a role in a comprehensive solution. The committee is calling for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to have the authority to reduce state operations for programs using a priority setting method while being careful not to exacerbate funding issues at the local level. Chamber hears from economist on what's ahead for the economy
The nation has yet to see the worst of the financial downturn, said Dr. Christopher Thornberg, Beacon Economics, at the Chamber's Economic Outlook Briefing, a partnership with the Southern California Leadership Network, Tuesday. We are not in a recession yet, Thornberg said, but the country is in the process of falling into one. He stressed that the impending economic crisis has been fueled by a pull back in consumer spending. “Two years ago consumers were in the midst of a buying binge, spending more than they were earning,” said Thornberg, who recommended that people prepare for when the market improves in 2009. Leadership Southern California discusses regional water challenges
The Leadership Southern California Class of 2008 visited the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Friday for an overview of the agency's governance structure, infrastructure planning, delivery and conservation. "Southern California cannot continue to rely on the state water project," said MWD Assistant General Manager and Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Ivey. "Our key to the future is figuring out how this region can control its own water supply." The class traveled to the F.E. Weymouth Treatment Plant in La Verne to take a closer look at managing environmental changes with the recent proliferation of Quagga mussels in the MWD’s aqueducts.
